Jeff began his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey in approximately 1996. Jeff saw the first UFC and started training after UFC II. He learned off tapes, travelled to California, Hawaii, and over the years has been to Brazil 5 times. Jiu-Jitsu was developed by Helio Gracie and the Gracie family. It was designed for the smaller and weaker person to defeat a bigger and stronger opponent. Jeff being a small guy himself 5'9' and back then 135lbs lol (now 160lbs) was hooked. He quickly became obsessed with the Brazilian grappling style.

The style consists of takedowns, intricate ground positions and submission holds which he was fascinated with. Jeff treated Jiu Jitsu like a university class and trained almost daily with whoever he could find that would grapple with him. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the only self defense system that really addresses ground grappling and Jeff was the only person at the time pursuing the knowledge in his city of Regina. He started teaching people as a whitebelt and continued to teach his always changing group throughout his belt ranks.

Jeff's Jiu Jitsu school quickly gained a reputation in Regina as having very effective self defense and well trained fighters.

Jeff was the first person in the province of Saskatchewan to receive the high honour of Blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He was also the first person in Saskatchewan to win a m edal in blackbelt division in Brazil in International competition. Jeff has won other titles in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, submission grappling, and has won each of his 4 MMA bouts.

Jeff was named 2007 Coach of the Year for Western Canada (CMMAC) as well.

Jeff's Jiu-Jitsu journey has also allowed him to assist others to learn, such as Paramedics, Police, Correctional Officers, women's groups, and troubled youth.

Jeff has trained some of Saskatchewan's best mma fighters and Jiu Jitsu athletes, and has had influence on almost all of the elite athletes in this sport throughout Saskatchewan. He wishes them all continued success and hopes they all meet their goals and dreams.

Jeff has taught many people throughout Saskatchewan, some who are still with him, and some who are not. He wishes to thank all of those individuals who helped him along his Jiu-Jitsu path:

Taught Jeff a new style of JiuJitsu

Jeff has trained with many people, yet wanted to thank the above individuals who trained with him,and or inspired him, and encouraged him to reach his goals.

Jeff feels JiuJitsu is changing, in positive and negative ways. Some blackbelts are allowing Jiu-Jitsu to get watered down, with Sport JiuJitsu (deep half guard,50/50position and other crazy positions), as well as its rules. The emphasis is not on self-defense in many JiuJitsu schools anymore. (Laying in deep half guard is not where one wants to be!)

At Wiley JiuJitsu, students focus on the basics of JiuJitsu, as well as wrestling techniques. The goal is for the student to be successful in self-defense situations. Afterwards, if the student chooses to compete in grappling or even mma later on, they may do so. Many schools in Brazil now only focus on tournament JiuJitsu, and therefore their self defense skills and mma skills will be weak. After 15 years of JiuJitsu training Jeff feels California JiuJitsu coaches (Javier "Showtime" Vazquez, New Generation Gracie Brothers, Anderson Goncalves) are on the cutting edge of Brazilian JiuJitsu for self defense, mma and tournament JiuJitsu.

Wiley JiuJitsu Academy is not concerned with Saskatchewan Mixed Martial Arts politics. The most important aspect at Wiley JiuJitsu is learning the highest level of Brazilian JiuJitsu, and enjoying life and the company of teammates!

Jeff would like to thank his students in Saskatchewan. He feels very fortunate to teach and to know such great people. He is very proud of the team that is building, changing, and always improving!
